How to use Drive Thru History: America in the Classroom
|

The nine units can be taught over the course of nine days (overview and video only), nine weeks, one semester or even one year.
Drive Thru History America: Foundations of Character is ideally suited for use as a supplement for your Social Studies program and is aligned with the National Council for Social Studies Standards. In the area of history, the materials address the era of the American Revolution examining what happened in the past and how 21st Century students are connected to those in the past. In the area of government, the material focuses on how our government was created, structured and how the Founders permanently shaped United States public policy. In the area of civics, the curriculum explores the meaning of citizenship and the importance of civic participation.
The curriculum provides opportunities for students to apply numerous social studies skills such as: critical-thinking skills, organization skills, gaining information from a variety of sources including electronic technology, communicating in written, oral, and visual forms, using problem-solving and decision-making skills, working independently and with others in a variety of settings.
The material also provides suggestions for longer projects such as a documentary, candidate's forum, newspaper publication, stock market activity, colonial feast, and dramatic presentation.
One-Semester Course
Drive Thru History America: Foundations of Character can be utilized as a one-semester course highlighting the Providential worldview of America's Founders. Using biographical narratives, students discover the character and faith that drove the people who helped shape the United States. Then students examine their own lives, beliefs and actions. Each of the nine segments will provide two weeks of classroom instructional time. A recommended approach for presenting the material follows:
Weeks 1 and 2 - Lesson 1: Pilgrims/Faith/History
Weeks 3 and 4 - Lesson 2: Benjamin Franklin/Commitment/Philosophy
Weeks 5 and 6 - Lesson 3: Benjamin Rush/Compassion/Sociology
Weeks 7 and 8 - Lesson 4: George Washington/Self Control/Politics
Weeks 9 and 10 - Lesson 5: Benjamin Banneker/Patience/Biology
Weeks 11 and 12 - Lesson 6: Haym Salomon/Generosity/Economics
Weeks 13 and 14 - Lesson 7: Abigail Adams/Influence/Psychology
Weeks 15 and 16 - Lesson 8: Noah Webster/Perseverance/ Law
Weeks 17 and 18 - Lesson 9: John Quincy Adams/Determination/Ethics
One-Year Course
Drive Thru History America: Foundations of Character can be utilized as a one-year Character Education program for young adolescents. The curriculum is built around nine units of instruction with each unit emphasizing one character trait and one historical figure. A recommended approach for presenting the material follows:
